Why Hire a San Diego Event Photographer?

As a San Diego event photographer, I only have one moment to get the shots you need: the shaking of hands at check-in, a keynote speaker's jokes landing with the audience, and the moment a recipient of an award shakes hands with the giver of an award. You want these moments captured beautifully. An event photographer makes sure these high-impact images end up in your marketing and not buried in a guest's camera roll.

Photography for Corporate Clients and Keynotes

As a San Diego conference photographer, I had the privilege of photographing LINE-X's Leading the Charge conference at the San Diego Hilton Bayfront. At this conference (as with many conferences) there were many keynote speakers. When using images of keynote speakers you want shots that display confidence and competence. For example, at the LINE-X conference they had an active-duty Green Beret speaking. He is a very active, powerful, and dynamic speaker so I wanted to make sure my photos reflected that. In order to accomplish this I made sure to grab photos from a lower angle. This lower angle frames the subject as taller, confident, and authoritative. I also focused on framing the subject on one side of the frame facing towards empty space. Using this technique shows the viewer that the speaker is talking to an audience and conveying an important message. The lens I used was a 70-200 f/2.8. This tighter zoom allows for the subject to take up more of the image and convey confidence. LINE-X proceeded to use these images for their marketing and on their LinkedIn. It's proof that the right equipment and experience can turn a conference photo into a brand asset.

Corporate Sponsorships and Giveaways

An event photographer's job is to capture moments that can happen quickly. It can be quick hugs from family, a smile in the middle of a conversation, or in this case a car giveaway. Chase Bank was giving away a car to a former active-duty Navy SEAL. This giveaway was done on the field at Snapdragon Stadium during halftime of a SDSU game. I had to be quick and efficient to grab all the photos the client wanted in the time it took for the car to drive on, the giveaway to happen, and for it all to end. In order to accomplish all of this in the time allotted, a photographer needs to make sure to have a great understanding of the fundamentals of camera exposure. Since lighting can change rapidly while moving, understanding the settings needed for specific locations can make or break a shoot. Then while everyone in the family is hugging and celebrating I had to move seamlessly and unobtrusively to avoid ruining the moment for the family. Chase used the images for their social media, and the family received a full set of photos to keep from the day.

Multi-Day Conferences and Travel

When hosting a multi-day conference you want to make sure you have a photographer who knows how to capture many different types of events. Long conferences usually have speakers, lunches, networking, and evening galas. Capturing each one of these requires plenty of experience and knowledge. When I photographed Azione Unlimited's three-day conference in Phoenix, Arizona, I came prepared with a shot list of each day and what the client wanted for each event. It started with an outdoor evening reception. This had very low light and focused heavily on candid interactions of people seeing each other for the first time in a year. I had to ensure I balanced my flash with my camera settings to focus on getting proper exposure. Then the second day had keynote speakers followed by breakout groups ending with a large celebration and charity giveaway. The keynote speakers were captured powerfully, the breakout groups looked informative and engaged, and the celebration felt fun and lively. The third day I had to capture the lunches and a final celebration at the Penske Racing Museum. When delivering the final images to Azione they used them for social media posts across LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook.

An event photographer brings the expertise and equipment to properly capture these moments. Great event photography is not about just showing up with a camera. It's about understanding lighting, timing, and how to read a room fast enough to capture the moments that won't happen twice. When you're hiring an event photographer, make sure to look through their portfolio to see if they have images that match your shoot. Whatever your next event is, I would love to help you capture it as your San Diego event photographer. Feel free to contact me so we can discuss your photography needs.
